Admission Requirements

Categories of Admission

The Office of Admissions offers programs through the traditional campus, here in Fulton, Mo., for full-time students seeking a degree from the university. Listed below are several terms to help you evaluate what kind of student you are. If you have further questions, visit our Frequently Asked Questions and When Should I Apply pages.

Freshman Applicants

William Woods University seeks students qualified to benefit from an education here at The Woods and who will actively contribute to student life. Every aspect of an applicant’s credentials, such as high school courses, grades and activities, performance on the ACT or SAT, class rank and community involvement are taken into consideration. Application for admission may be made at any time, however, students wishing to enroll for the fall semester (August) are encouraged to submit their applications by the preceding January. Accordingly, students wishing to enroll for the spring semester (January) should apply no later than December 1.

Home-Schooled Applicants

William Woods has experienced a dramatic increase in enrollment from the home-schooling population, and has found that the prospective and current home-schooled students offer strong academics and a positive contribution to student life.

Admission Requirements

Home-schooled students must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission at William Woods: a score of at least 19 ACT/860 SAT, a grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale from an accredited home school program, and submit two letters of recommendation. If the student does not meet the criteria, he or she may be considered for Provisional Acceptance.

Application for Admission

The completed form must be accompanied by an application fee of $25.

Current university admission policy requires that freshman admission candidates posess a high school diploma or a Certificate of Equivalence earned by successful completion of the GED (General Education Development) test.

Secondary School Transcript or diploma

Current university admission policy requires freshman admission candidates possess a high school diploma or a Certificate of Equivalence earned by successful completion of the GED (General Education Development) test. A curriculum outline is also accepted if a diploma or GED is not available, along with a list of courses, as well as a curricula or syllabus for each subject completed.

ACT / SAT Test Scores

The student should request the scores be sent to the Office of Admissions at William Woods. Scores are not required if the student has been out of school more than five years.

References

Two non-family members, who are familiar with the student’s academic work, should be listed as references. Teachers or professors are recommended, although we do understand that sometimes teachers are family members.

A copy of William Woods University's Annual Security Report. This report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on-campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by William Woods University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus.

International Students

In addition to meeting regular admissions requirements, international students must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently enough to complete coursework. The student must have made a 550 or above on the TOEFL, or another examination equivalent to the TOEFL.

Applicants must submit official transcripts of any post-secondary institutions. If original transcripts are not in English, certified or notarized English translations must accompany them. Students must also present an official statement of financial support, sufficient enough to cover tuition, room and board. An I-20 form (certificate of eligibility for a student visa) cannot be issued until the TOEFL scores and statement of financial support are on file. F-1 students must maintain a full-time course load.

Students must have health insurance. If not, they can seek assistance from the university upon arrival for purchase of insurance.

International Acceptance Guidelines

Students from non-English speaking countries are required to provide proof of English proficiency. William Woods University will accept any of the scores listed below as proof of English proficiency:

  1. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam - undergraduate students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 500 (paper based), 173 (computer based), or 61 (internet based IBT). Graduate students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), 80 (internet based IBT). Visit TOEFL's website for more information about the test.
  2. STEP - EIKEN - students must succuessfully passs the Grade Pre-1 level test.

Upon Acceptance to William Woods University

  • Completed Academic History form
  • Completed Affidavit of Funds form
  • Completed Affidavit of Financial Support form
  • Statement from bank showing available funds, statement is to be no older than 60 days
  • Prior to arrival on campus, proof of insurance must be submitted
  • All documents must be orginal and be recieved either in person or through the mail. Copied, faxed and emailed documents are not valid documents for an I-20 to be issued.
  • A deposit of $250 must be recieved before an I-20 can be issued.

Transfer Students

WWU accepts a number of students each year that transfer from other institutions. Acceptance is reserved for students who are eligible to return to their former institution and have met all other admission requirements. Transfer students who have earned an associate degree will receive credit for up to 62 credit hours, including courses with a “D” grade, however, if a “D” grade is a prerequisite for another course, it must be repeated.

Transfer credits are generally accepted at full value, providing that the transferring institution is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, or an equivalent accrediting agency, and the course content is similar to that offered at William Woods.

Accepted transfer hours are figured into the total 122 credit hours required for completion of a baccalaureate degree, but transfer grades are not calculated into the student’s grade point average. Transfer students must have at least a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale to be considered for acceptance. If the criteria are not met, they may be eligible for provisional acceptance

The application procedure will be considered complete when the followingthree items have been received:

  1. Application for Admission. The completed for must be accompanied by a $25 application fee, waived for online applications.
  2. College Transcripts. A student must submit official transcripts from all colleges attended to William Woods University, Office of Admissions.
  3. References. A student should list two non-family members who are familiar with the student's academic work. (Teachers or professors are recommended)

Non-Degree seeking applicants

For students who wish to take a course for the purpose of personal enrichment, for transfer to another college, or to secure credit pending change to enrolling status, you may be admitted on a part-time basis. Applicants must present a high school diploma or equivalent as a minimum admission credential and must give evidence of ability to follow college-level coursework. Applications are completed at the Office of the Registrar, 573.592.4249. Advisement and registration are initiated at the Office of Academic Advisement. Students who have been denied admission or dismissed from the university are not eligible for enrollment under this category.
