5/26/2010 Mary Ann Beahon
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (573) 592-1127

Heather OetjenHeather Oetjen of Prior Lake, Minn., received several major awards at William Woods University’s academic convocation and co-curricular honors banquet, April 20. Oetjen is the daughter of John and Cynthia Oetjen. She is majoring in elementary education, with a minor in art.

She received the Cockrell Award, which is presented to the graduating senior who has participated in a variety of campus activities, serving as an officer or chair, and who has held membership in honorary groups. The student must exemplify outstanding campus citizenship, contribute to society, exhibit loyalty to the university and its policies and have a genuine regard for others in personal relationships.

Oetjen also was one of eight William Woods University students named to the 2010 edition of “Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” A campus nominating committee and editors of the annual directory chose the students based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.

By being listed in “Who’s Who,” she joins an elite group of students from more than 2,300 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states.  Outstanding students have been honored in the annual directory since it was first published in 1934.

In addition, she was chosen as one of 18 Outstanding Students at WWU. The Outstanding Student Awards are the only awards at William Woods University bestowed on students by the nomination and vote of other students. Nominees must demonstrate academic achievement, campus and community involvement and leadership. She was also the recipient of this award as a sophomore and junior.

Oetjen is a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and has served as chapter president, vice president of fraternity relations, chapter relations and standards board member, alumnae chair and philanthropy chair. She was awarded the Alpha Chi Omega A.C.E. Award and recently was named Outstanding Chapter President at the Greek Awards Ceremony.

She has served as president of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership fraternity, class representative for Student Alumni Council, recording secretary of Student Assembly, an executive board member of Up ’Till Dawn for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and a founding member of EDU Owls.

She also is a member of Kappa Delta Pi education honorary, Order of Omega Greek honorary, History Club and the Recycling Club. Her volunteer activities have included Haircuts for CARD-V, Fulton Preschool, Fulton Soup Kitchen, Vacation Bible School, Presbyterian Manor, Red Cross blood drive, SERVE, Clothesline project, Take Back the Night, Animal Shelter and Locks of Love.
